Ten Famous Female Surfers

Here’s a list of ten famous female surfers making waves today.

9. Christa Alves

Born in 1989, this New Jersey native dropped out of traditional public school opting instead for home schooling. This option gave her more time to perfect her craft. The risk has paid off for Alves: she has a trophy case full of bragging rights. Big scores include several Junior National and East Coast Championships. In 2006, she took home in the ASP North American Juniors title. And in 2008 she became the ASP North America Junior Pro Champ.

8. Erica Hosseini

This Orange County California champion was born in 1987, and has had a quick rise to the top of the next generation of female surfers. Already she has won the Volcom Championships, The US Championships in 2005, and the Roxy Pro Junior in 2007. In addition, she also does a bit of modeling.

7. Karina Petroni

An import from the American Canal zone of Panama, Petroni began surfing at just two years old. Since then she’s torn up the surf all around the globe and is best known for being the youngest surfer in history (male or female) to nab an amateur championship. She won two more of those before graduating to Eastern US and National Championship titles.

6. Keala Kennelly

Born in 1978, this Hawaiian native is a recognizable name in surfing even to those who aren’t familiar with the sport. She’s surfed on the silver screen too, making an appearance in “Blue Crush.” Known as “The Queen of Keahupoo”, Kennelly was the first woman towed to Keahupoo, and remains the record holder for woman having towed the largest wave.

4. Megan Abubo

Another females classic surfer, this icon was born in 1977. Abubo has been a big name in the surf world since she joined the professional tour in 1998. She is a constant leader board topper on the tour and has six Association of Surfing World Championship wins.  Like Kennelly, Abubo worked for the movie “Blue Crush” as a stunt double.

3. Serena Brooke

Australian born Brooke has been ranked has the number 2 female surfer in the world. She joined the pro tour in 1997 and ranked in the top five for her entire five-year run.

1. Layne Beachley

The Australian with the appropriate name, Beachley is considered perhaps the best female surfer of all time by many sport enthusiasts. With seven world championships (1998-2003 and again in 2006), she remains one of very few women ever invited to participate in a male competition when she was invited to the Energy Australian Open.
