Choosing The Right Boat Building Blueprints

Boats come in different types and sizes, therefore, to choose the right blueprints for a boat, you Must Have several things to keep in mind. Once you determine the requirements that suit your preference, it’ll be easier to get your hands on boat building blueprints.

Some of the tings you have to go over are:

TYPE OF BOATS

Obviously, you must have a particular boat in mind when scouring the internet for a boat blueprint. The type of boat largely depends on your predefined purpose for the boat.

Are you going to use it for sailing, rowing or perhaps you wish to add a motor to the boat.

Another thing is which boat design are you specifically looking for? Are you planning on building a dory, a dinghy, a skiff or a duckboat. Some works great in open seas, other designs are specifically for navigation in shallow waters and marshes. A duckboat is a good example of this.

MATERIALS

Most boat builders uses wood, aluminum, fiberglass, polyethylene or a combination of 2 of these materials to build their boat. To choose a boat blueprints, you must have an idea what your preferred material is if it is of an importance.

As far as my observation goes, wood is still the more widely used materials. Perhaps because it is easier to work on and easier to procure. And one of the cheapest materials around.

Aluminum is one of the sturdiest materials but you’ll have to have at least basic welding skills to be able to build an aluminum boat. Fiberglass, on the other hand is one of the best materials to use. It is durable and much easier to work on than aluminum but it is not readily available and kind of expensive. Polyethylene is much like fiberglass in my opinion but constant dragging of the boat or hauling it out of the water can peel off and damage the boat.

SKILLS

Skills would play an important role in choosing what blueprints for a boat you are going to choose. I wouldn’t dream of suggesting that you build a complicated aluminum boat unless you have an experience in welding. A novice would do good starting on building a small wooden boat instead. Also you have to consider the amount of time and effort that goes into building a boat of particular design.

Building a boat can be a daunting task at first but if you have a definite plans in mind, it’ll be much easier to choose the right boat blueprint and start the building process right away.

Personally, I’m fon of a specific catalog of Boat Plans which can be a nifty guide for both the novice and experienced boat builder. The good thing about this boat plans is you have several options to choose from and you already know the specific requirements needed to build a particular boat.

It has this step-by-step instruction along with pictures which makes everything less confusing.
