Interested In Learning How To Pole Dance? Here’s What To Expect In Pole Dancing Class by Nikita Rose
What Happens In A Pole Dance Class?
Pole dancing, with its associations with stripper in seedy clubs has a fair amount of stigma attached to it. Despite all of this, pole dancing for exercise is a fitness trend sweeping the country and scores of women flock to classes on any given day. Despite its salacious roots, what goes on in these classes is pretty far from its strip club origins. Wondering what to expect when you go to a pole dance class? We’ll take the mystery out of it for you before you even get there!
Warmup
At the beginning of class, you always do a warmup to stretch your body as well and get your blood flowing. But this isn’t like your typical gym class – there will be no jumping jacks to be found.
Instead, you’ll be taken through a series of stretches, and some sexy yoga poses and dance moves that mimic what you’ll be doing during actual pole dancing.
So expect a fair amount of hip circling, back arching, and sensual gyrations mixed in with more basic stretches.
If your instructor has a heavy fitness leaning, you can also expect some pushups and ab exercises like crunches that will really make your muscles burn.
Dancing
Most instructors come prepared with a choreographed routine to teach the class. The very first pole move you will learn is how to walk around the pole while looking graceful and beautiful. This actually takes more practice and finesse than you would think!
After learning how to walk, you’ll learn some other dance moves on the floor – think sexy and seductive. The “girly pushup” is a classic move, and you’ll you inevitable see it any pole dance class you’ll attend. You lay on the floor and push yourself up booty first slowly and sensually – emphasizing the natural curves in your body. This is harder than it looks!
Tricks and Spins
As for the actual tricks, you are guaranteed to learn a basic beginner spin. Even the basic spins take a bit of coordination to master and can be a little intimidating, but once you get spinning down, you’ll feel as if you’re flying. It’s an exhilarating feeling.
You may also learn how to climb up the pole as well, depending on your instructor. This requires a fair amount of strength and coordination, so don’t be worried if as a beginner it’s difficult to even get your feet off the ground. As you gradually build up strength from taking classes, you will begin to be able to climb further and further up the pole each time.
Choreography
The walking, floor moves, spinning and possibly climbing will all be mixed in a fun routine set to music. The choreography is repeated throughout the class in bits, so you have a chance to pick it up and feel yourself dancing. This helps you learn to flow in your dancing and go with the music.
Keep in mind that different instructors have different styles and you won’t know what you like until you try it out. Some are more athletic and focus more on tricks and moves that emphasize strength, control and flexibility.
Others have a more sensual, feminine style where the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in your body and these kind of instructors tend to have more floor moves and less actual difficult tricks in their routines.
It’s fun to experiment with different instructors and as you pursue your pole dancing journey, you may even develop favorite instructors and studios to fit your different moods.
