Dating Online Had A negative Connotation by Frank Vanderlugt
Dating online used to have a very negative connotation. After all, who were you really chatting with, a 27-year-old female, or a 52-year-old man with a beer belly? There are still some problems with online dating, but the legitimate sites have made substantial changes to make online dating work.
So what is online dating like? There are many online dating services out there, but most ask you to pay a subscription fee in order to log in to their website for a specific length of time. You can enter information about yourself like your location, age, height, weight, interests, type of job, if you have children and their ages, and more.
Some people love the anonymity that online dating provides. You don’t have to “reveal” yourself until you find someone with whom you think you might click. But for others, that same anonymity brings worries. What if the person you want to date has a criminal record?
Currently, only True.com offers background checks of online dating applicants, but be aware that True.com currently can’t access data for six states, and in other states they are only allowed access to records for certain jurisdictions. So there is limited reassurance with some sites, but not much. Then again, finding a date in a bar or other social gathering carries the same concerns. You’re basically taking that person’s word about his or her background.
One big advantage to online dating is that you can narrow your search to people who share your interests. Rather than go from party to bar to social gathering looking for that other person who loves building and paddling birch-bark canoes, you can list that as an interest at an online dating site and someone with the same interest can search you out.
Once you’re online, internet dating can take a lot less time than traditional dating methods. Once you post your profile (or “portrait” as one online site calls it), you can read through e-mails you get in response to your posting and only respond to those that appeal to you.
Online dating can, of course, get very personal. It’s important that you not fall so head-over-heels that you abandon all common sense. It’s not a good idea to give your address or phone number to someone you just met in a bar, and for the same reason you don’t want to do it online. Chat with the person for a few days or weeks. Then, if you’re still comfortable, exchange information.
True love rarely happens in an instant, and if both of you are serious about your developing relationship, you’ll take things one step at a time. But online dating, once scoffed at as a passing fad or a dangerous obsession, has worked quite well for many people. Whether you’re looking for someone to share some time with or a common interest, or searching for that soul mate or lifetime companion, internet dating is an option for many.
Maybe it’s an option for you.
